Stories, Travel Ideas and Visitor Information for Your Next Trip to Buena Vista, Colorado

The Perfect Buena Vista Day-Trip?

Historical Interlaken Resort Twin Lakes Colorado Buena Vista If someone asked you to list all the things you’d want on the perfect Colorado outing, what would you include?  Mountains?  Water?  Views?  History?  Fun for the whole Family?  You’d be hard pressed to find a trip that has more of that Colorado spirit than you’ll find on the road to Interlaken.

The trail to the historic Interlaken resort winds along the shore of Twin Lakes, Colorado, offering soaring views of 14,000-foot Mt. Elbert, moderate hiking and mountain biking, and an interesting historical destination. After 3 miles on the trail, you reach the mining-era resort of Interlaken, a National Historic Landmark. At around 9,200 feet (about 1,000 feet higher than Buena Vista), this is a great place to beat the heat and even offers a sandy beach near the trailhead for swimming, boating or stand up paddling. The trail is 3 miles out and 3 miles back with some ups and downs but no overall elevation gain.

Around 35 minutes driving from South Main and Buena Vista, CO, the Interlaken trail is an easy day trip, or even an after work outing in the summer months. This past weekend, my wife Katie and I biked the trail for the first time.  last fall the trail made for a fabulous fall color hike with the kids. Katie is fairly new to mountain biking, and the moderate difficulty of the trail was perfect for her with a few technical downhills that she walked. Overall the riding is narrow and fun singletrack in a stunning setting. Just don’t get too distracted by the views of the lake and the mountains!

Interlaken itself is a collection of historic buildings that were once a mining-era resort catering to the rich and famous. But with the construction of the Twin Lakes Dam by the Bureau of Reclamation in 1978,

the resort was actually moved to higher ground to preserve it as a heritage site and avoid its flooding with the filling of the Twin Lakes Reservoir. If you’re staying in Buena Vista, perhaps in a South Main Vacation Rental, this is a great option if you’re looking for:

-moderate hiking or mountain biking
- cooler temperatures

-a mountain setting
-beach time
-fall colors
-an interpretive historical experience
